Buying or Selling a Home in Allen, TX: One County, Four Districts

Short answer. All of Allen is in Collin County, but an Allen address can be in one of four school districts: Allen, Lovejoy, McKinney or Plano ISD. The city grew from 43,554 people in 2000 to 104,627 in 2020 and is largely built out, so most deals are resales. Confirm the district by address.

Why can one Allen address be in a different school district?

Allen ISD serves most of the city, covers 27.1 square miles and also reaches into parts of Parker and McKinney, according to the Wikipedia article on Allen. Parts of Allen sit in Lovejoy ISD, McKinney ISD and Plano ISD. District lines were not drawn to match the city limit.

For 2025-26 the Texas Education Agency reported 20,092 students in Allen ISD. The district runs one high school for grades 10 through 12 and a separate freshman center for grade 9, so a family moving here should ask how that structure works for their child. Voters approved a 442.1 million dollar bond in November 2024. A bond can change taxes and campus plans, so read the district's own bond page for what it funds. Look up the exact address on the district's tool and confirm with the enrollment office before you describe a school to a buyer. We make no statement about how any district compares with another.

What should Allen buyers check?

  • Age of roof, HVAC and water heater, since the Census median build year is around 2003
  • Foundation history and any repair paperwork, given the clay soil
  • Whether the street has an HOA, a PID or a MUD, and the yearly cost
  • Hail and storm claim history for the address

In a built-out city your listing is one of many similar resales.

  • Recent closed sales of homes with similar size and age on your own street
  • Whether buyers will compare your home with one in a different school district
  • Receipts for the roof, HVAC and any foundation work
  • The HOA resale certificate, ordered early so a buyer is not waiting
  • Updates a buyer will notice in the first five minutes, and a lowest acceptable price set before offers arrive
